At 0701 on December 30, Engine 5 was dispatched to the area of Route 128 by exit 18 for a report of a motor vehicle fire. Upon arrival, Lt. Robert Atherton found a car with its engine compartment fully involved in fire extending into the passenger compartment. Lt. Atherton and his crew used a hose line and 250 gallons of water to extinguish the fire. The cause of the fire is listed as failure of equipment.No one was injured and the vehicle was towed from the scene by Cross Towing.Engine 5 was clear of the scene at 0745.
Car Fire 12/20
At 2009 on December 20, the Beverly Fire Department responded for a report of a car fire at 6 Robin Rd. Truck 1 was dispatched from headquarters by Dispatcher Gretchen Nolan. While responding to the scene, a second call reported that the car was close to the house and an additional two Engines were dispatched.
Lt. Eric Fowler arrived with the crew of Truck 1 to find a passenger vehicle with fire involving the engine compartment as well as the dash and forward passenger compartment. Fowler and his crew immediately attacked the fire knocking it down before it had a chance to spread to any areas of the home.
Truck 1 used 500 gallons of water and all units were clear of the scene by 2040.
The cause of the fire is being listed as unintentional, electrical in nature.
Firefighters assess the damage at an evening motor vehicle crash
At 1909 on 12/19, the Beverly Fire Department responded for a report of a motor vehicle accident at the intersection of Rantoul and Federal St’s. Upon arrival, crews found a single vehicle had crashed into the electrical box that controls the street signs and a pole. The driver was out of the vehicle and being interviewed by police but stated that he was not injured.
Firefighters assessed the scene, spread speedi dry over fluids that had leaked from the vehicle, and stood by for the City Electrician to respond to assess the damage.
Once the vehicle was safe, it was towed from the scene.
Engine 1 was tied up at the scene from 1909 to 1930.
Incidents 12/19
Saturday proved to be a busy day for firefighters as cold weather played havoc on water pipes in buildings across the city. The first incident occurred at the Beverly National Bank offices located at 246 Cabot St. A fitting in the sprinkler system broke in a stairwell causing water to flow through the ceiling into the stairwell and basement. Firefighters shut down the system and bank representatives responded to the scene to facilitate repairs.
Three hours after the National Bank call, at 1045, the department responded for a report of fire alarm activation at 208 Rantoul St, the Overtime Sports Bar. Upon arrival, crews found water pouring through a ceiling at the rear of a bar. After further investigation, three separate broken pipes were found in remote areas. Fire crews shut down domestic water and heat in portions of the building in order to stop the flow of water and building representatives responded to make repairs.
The third water incident occurred at 1917 when two sprinkler heads opened as a result of freezing at Endicott Colleges Manchester Hall Dormitory. Again fire crews shut down the flow of water while representatives from the College responded to make repairs.
In a non weather related incident, Firefighters responded to 41 Elliott St for a report of a fire alarm activation. Upon arrival, Lt. James Archibald and his crew found an extinguished fire in the kitchen of apartment number 3. The crew encountered the occupant in a densely smoke filled apartment and determined that the fire was out. Firefighters ventilated the apartment and made notification to the property owner to respond for repairs. The fire was caused by unattended food on the stove igniting and extending to a hood above the stove.
Truck 1 in Service
Nearly three years after the process of finding a new truck began, Truck 1 was placed into service at Beverly Fire Headquarters. The Truck had a very busy tour with companies responding to 25 emergency calls including a serious motor vehicle accident that involved 1 occupied vehicle and 3 parked cars in the area of 245 Hale St.
Electrical Fire 12/15
At 0940, the Beverly Fire Department responded for a report of a fire in the kitchen at the Depot Restaurant on Park St. Upon arrival, crews found a light smoke condition in the kitchen and narrowed the area of the source to the floor beneath a dishwasher. Firefighters removed the dishwasher and extinguished the small fire on the wooden floor and checked the surrounding area for fire extension. No additional fire was found and all crews were clear of the scene by 0945. Fire Investigators determined the fire to be caused by an electrical malfunction by a piece of equipment in that area.
Motor Vehicle Crash 12/15
At 0645, while returning to their quarters from another call, Engine 5 came upon a motor vehicle crash on route 128 S by Dodge St. The accident involved two vehicles with a rollover and the entrapment of two occupants. Firefighter Steve White notified Fire Alarm of the incident and requested additional resources as the two vehicles were spread out over a significant distance and the Jaws of Life were going to be required on one of the vehicles.
Engine 5 worked at the site of the overturned vehicle using its extrication tools to remove two doors to free the occupants in the vehicle that were suspended by their seatbelts. Neither occupant complained of significant injuries but both were transported to the hospital for evaluation.
At the second vehicle, crews from Truck 1 assessed the scene to find the occupants of the vehicle were uninjured. The crew assessed leaking fluids and stood by until the truck was removed from the scene.
Engine’s 1, 5 and Truck 1 operated at the scene with Chief Pierce and Captain Jeff Sirois overseeing the two incident areas.
All fire personnel were clear of the scene at 0727.
