A History of Service

 Second Alarm

1/30/12

At 1640, the Beverly Fire Department responded to 3 Doloff Ave for a reported fire alarm activation. Truck 1 arrived first to find the alarms sounding but no visual evidence of a problem. Within moments, thick smoke began to pour from the exterior walls and heavy fire could be seen from the windows looking into the church.

Crews from Engine 5, Truck 2 and Engine 1 immediately began advancing lines into the building in an effort to keep the fire from advancing beyond the main room of the church. Engine 3 arrived and cut a hole in the roof to get the trapped heat and smoke out so that firefighters could work inside the church. Assisted by crews from Salem, Danvers, and Manchester, the firefighters were able to keep the heavy fire damage isolated but smoke did spread throughout the front of the church as well.

There was no one in the church at the time the fire broke out and no one was injured as a result of the fire. Fire investigators from Beverly Fire and Police Departments as well as the Office of the State Fire Marshall, and the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms remain on scene to determine what caused the blaze.

Significant damage was done to the interior of the building. An estimate of the cost of that damage is not currently available.

Rehab 5, Beverly Emergency Management, and Northeast Regional Ambulance also assisted at the fire scene.

Information provided by Beverly Fire Department Public Information Officer Chad McCormack

At 2034, Beverly Firefighters were dispatched to a report of a building fire on Trask Ln. Within seconds, multiple calls were received reporting a building fire at 10 Folly Pond Rd. Engines 5 and 3 were dispatched with Truck 1, Car 2, and Car 4.

Engine 5 was the first to arrive finding heavy fire conditions at the rear of 10 Folly Pond Rd extending from the first floor to the roof and completely engulfing three rear apartments. A second alarm was struck and the crew immediately stretched a line and began to knock down exterior fire. Truck 1 and Danvers Engine 3 arrived shortly after Engine 5 and conducted a sweep of the apartments and made an attempt to fight the fire from the interior of the building but fire and structural conditions prevented firefighters from advancing.

After a brief exterior fire attack, crews reentered the building with the help of Salem and Manchester. As firefighters were getting the upper hand, conditions rapidly began to deteriorate and the crews were forced to exit the structure. And a third alarm was struck.

The stubborn fire was battled from the outside for hours before fire crews could once again get back into the building and dig out fires hidden behind walls and ceilings. Crews were challenged by poor structural conditions and deep hidden fire inside the building and freezing temperatures outside.

By 0200, the fire was declared out and crews began clearing the scene. Fire fighters from Beverly, Salem, Danvers, Peabody, Manchester, Wenham, Hamilton and Topsfield worked at the scene, while additional firefighters from Marblehead, Lynnfield and Middleton covered stations. Rehab 5, Northeast Ambulance and Beverly Police also worked at the scene.

The fire is currently under investigation by members of the State Fire Marshal’s Office, Beverly Police and Fire Department Investigators. No cause has been determined but the fire destroyed the twelve units in 10 Folly Pond Rd and forced the evacuation of 5 Folly Pond Rd. Neither building is habitable this evening.

Beverly Firefighters will remain on scene overnight looking for hot spots.

There were no injuries, but several pets perished in the fire.
