First Snow Brings Nasty Driving 10/28/11
This year's first snowfall and cold weather brought with it terrible driving conditions for unprepared drivers. Beverly Firefighters responded to several motor vehicle crashes including three rollovers. Although only minor injuries were reported, the accidents all resulted in significant vehicle damage and snarled traffic. Around 3 am firefighters responded to the Hall Whittaker Bridge for a motor vehicle rollover after a car skidded off the bridge and rolled onto its side. Then around 5 am, Engine 5, Truck 1, Car 4, and Car 2 responded to route 128 in the area of Dodge St for a report of a motor vehicle rollover. As Engine 5 arrived on the scene, a second crash occurred right behind their vehicle. One vehicle was found to have suffered severe damage from a rollover and a second was up on the guard rail leaking gasoline on the roadway. Fortunately, none of the occupants was injured. As crews returned from the crash on 128, another rollover occurred on the Hall Whittaker Bridge and a school van drove off the road on the Brimbal Ave overpass. City and State sanders were requested to the areas that were hazardous.

Bridge St Fire
Sunday morning Oct.23 just after 8:30 am, the Beverly Fire Department responded to a report of a house fire at 138 Bridge Street. While in route Police officer April Clarizia was first on scene and entered the home and checked to insure that no one was inside of the house.When Car 2 and Truck One from headquarter arrived at the scene smoke was coming out of the eaves and open windows.
The Truck 1 crew immediately stretched a line through the front door finding flames in the living room. They started knocking down the blaze in an effort to keep the fire from spreading into adjacent rooms. Engine 5’s crew, from the North Beverly station, took a second line to the second floor and knocked down fire that had already extended to the room above the living room. Engine 3’s crew, from the Beverly Farm station, Salem's Engine 1 and Danvers Ladder 1 all went into the home and helped with ventilation and digging out hidden fires. All crews worked fast to knock down the blaze before it spread farther into the home.
The home, which is currently for sale, is an older style colonial with a large addition to the side. The fire was in the old section of the home. The house had heavy fire, smoke and water damage and not suitable for the 2 occupants to stay in at this time. National Grid had to cut power to the home.
Beverly fire inspector's Lt Robert Bergeron and Firefighter Mark Brewer as well as Beverly Police Department's Detective Jeffery Liacos were on scene starting their investigation to find the source of the blaze. They feel the fire is electrical in nature but still under investigation. The estimated damage to the property is the range of $30,000.Rehab 5 was also at the scene. Wenham Fire Department covered the North Beverly Station and Manchester covered Headquarters while Beverly Crews were tied up at the fire.

House Fire 102 Valley 10/20/11
Shortly after 6pm on Oct 20th Beverly Fire Departments Engine 3 was dispatched to a possible fire in the electrical wire in front of 104 Valley Street. After arriving at the scene Engine 3 officer Lieutenant Robert Bergeron informed fire alarm that it was a small fire in the wires and requested National Grid to respond to shut power to that line. A small crowd of neighbor had assembled to see what was going on and as they were standing outside, a person notified Lt. Bergeron that the fire alarms were going off in 102 Valley Street. Bergeron and Firefighter AJ Petronzio made entry into the house and noticed heavy smoke on the first floor.They immediately called fire alarm to request Car-2 and crews from Engine 5 and Truck-1 to the scene for a possible house fire. The Engine 3 crew quickly stretched a line into the home searching for the source of the smoke. They found heavy smoke coming from the cellar door and made way down the interior stairs and immediately found flames in the ceiling of the utility room. The crew quickly knocked down the flames with the attack line as another crew from Truck-1, Capt Chris Halloran and Firefighters David Genest and Brad Saunders, stretched a 2nd line into the first floor and started looking for extention of the fire with their thermal imaging camera. Engine 5 crew Lieutenant Arthur Fitzpatrick and Firefighters Joe Tucker and Pat Brady quickly hooked up to a hydrant and laid a water supply line to Engine 3 where Firefighter Dean Julien was running the pump. The fire did not extend to any other part of the house and all crews worked to overhaul the fire area and ventilate the home. The crews were all packed up and released from the scene by 8:30. The officer in charge at the scene was Deputy Chief Michael Acciavatti. The property is a single family 2 floor colonial style home with a walk out basement in back. The occupants had to find housing for the evening. The electricity was shut down to the home and has some minor smoke and water damage. The fire is under investigation by investigator Mark Brewer and has not been determined if it was related to the wire fire at 104 Valley st. The estimated damage was approximately 10-15 thousand dollars

The Beverly Fire Department held its 2011 Annual Open House today at 15 Hale St. Hundreds of families stopped by to watch firefighters perform demonstrations that varied from high angle rescue and the Jaws of Life to how a firefighter's gear protects him/her in a fire. In addition to learning about firefighters, families were treated to hot dogs and pizza. By the end of the day, more than 400 hot dogs and 90 pizzas had been consumed. A special thanks to all of the companies that helped sponsor today's event. They include Papa Gino's, Deputy Doggs, New Beverly Auto, Super Sub, and Northeast Regional Ambulance.
